Why Advice Isn’t Always Enough
Every day we’re surrounded by advice. Sometimes we don’t need more advice. We need a story.
Scroll through social media and you’ll find countless people telling us what we should do, how we should lead, or what decision we should make next. Most of it is well-intentioned. Some of it is even helpful.
But when we’re facing a consequential decision, advice isn’t always what we need most.
Sometimes we don’t need another opinion, we need perspective.
Other times we need the space to slow down, hear ourselves think, and discover what matters most before taking the next step.
As a coach, I’ve learned that people rarely need someone to make the decision for them.
More often, they need a process that helps them think more clearly, recognize what matters, consider the trade-offs, and move forward with confidence.
That’s why I created the Values to Action Podcast™.
Why I Created the Values to Action Podcast™
But if I’m being completely honest…I didn’t create it just because I’m a coach.
As a high achieving woman, I created it because there was a season in my own life when I desperately needed something like this.
I know what it feels like to carry a decision that keeps you awake at night, and I have questioned myself.
I know what it feels like to be pulled in different directions. Believe me, I’ve spent so much time thinking about everyone else that I lost sight of my own voice.
Looking back, I wish I had a place where I could have listened to a story that reflected what I was going through, and not because I wanted someone to tell me what to do, but because I needed the space to think differently about my own decision.
That’s what I hope this podcast becomes for you.
This podcast was created for women like me—and perhaps women like you.
Hard working, talented women who are leading, and who are caring for others.
AMAZING women who are carrying more than most people realize, and who are trying to make decisions they can truly stand behind.
A Story That Helps You Think Differently
Each episode follows a fictional character navigating a consequential decision using the Highroads Decision Process™. These aren’t stories about perfect people or perfect outcomes. They’re stories about real dilemmas that many of us face in our careers, our leadership, our relationships, and our lives.
My hope isn’t that you’ll make the same decision they do, but my hope is that somewhere in their story, you’ll recognize a little of yourself.
Maybe you’ll hear a question you hadn’t considered.
Possibly you’ll discover that your decision isn’t as simple as “stay or leave” or “yes or no”, or you’ll simply feel less alone.
How Stories Can Help You Make Better Decisions
I’m excited to share that the Values to Action Podcast™ is now available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
Episode One introduces Elena, a VP of HR navigating a consequential decision that many leaders and professionals may recognize.
Every Monday, spend just 15 minutes with a story.
Recognize yourself in it.
Think differently about your own decision.
Because sometimes the most important question isn’t,
“What should I do?”
It’s,
“What decision can I stand behind?”
I hope you’ll join me.
Warmly,
Annie
