Values Are Lived, Not Listed

You Are Rooted in Your Values

Most coaching conversations begin with values.

What matters most to you?

Is there a kind of life you envision you’d like to build?

What do you want more of?

I still begin there. Because as a coach, we explore that values are lived, not listed.

Identifying your values does not give you the answer. However, it gives you a meaningful place to start.

Most of us can easily identify the values we aspire to live by: health, family, growth, impact, connection, and freedom.

Yet values are more than words we select from a list. We carry them with us, and our everyday choices show how we live them.

Where do they live in your life, rather than just on a list?

What Your Calendar Reveals

Our calendars reveal many of those choices.

Your stated values are aspirations.

Your calendar values are actuals.

The gap between the two often holds the most useful information.

When I experienced burnout, I could have told you exactly what I valued. Health was on the list. Family was on the list. Personal growth was on the list.

However, my calendar told a different story. Where was I living them?

My days included long work hours, constant availability, little margin, and almost no time for the people and experiences I said mattered most.

I had not chosen the wrong values. Instead, I had organized my time around a different set of priorities: responsibility, productivity, and meeting everyone else’s needs.

As a result, I lived according to what felt urgent, expected, and necessary—not necessarily according to what mattered most.

The Gap Is Feedback, Not Failure

Recognizing that gap can feel uncomfortable. At the same time, it can bring incredible clarity.

A misaligned calendar does not mean you are failing. Nor does it mean you lack discipline. Most importantly, it does not make your values any less real.

The gap is feedback, not failure. And it’s not your fault. Do not blame yourself. We are HUMAN.

Receive it with grace. It can show you where expectations, habits, or responsibilities have quietly taken precedence over what you value most.

Once you recognize that pattern, you have a choice.

You do not need to redesign your entire life overnight. Instead, begin by looking honestly at your calendar and making one intentional change.

After all, values are not demonstrated by how beautifully we name them. Our choices demonstrate them.

So, what is one change you could make to your calendar this week so that it more clearly reflects what matters most to you?

Begin where you are. Build what’s sustainable.
